    1893-CC Double Eagle, MS61
    Lustrous Final-Year Carson City Coin

1893-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The 1893-CC double eagle has been fairly plentiful in Mint State for decades, although this only serves to heighten demand among Carson City gold collectors as attractive examples of the issue are viewed as obtainable, albeit for a price. According to David Akers (1982), most Uncirculated pieces known came from European holdings in the late 1960s through repatriation. Were it not for this phenomenon, the 1893-CC would likely be a rare or at least conditionally rare date in the Carson City series, as only 18,402 coins were struck.

The present representative displays radiant honey-gold luster and satiny surfaces. The strike is sharp, and only light surface chatter limits the grade since no major abrasions are observed. No die lapping is visible at the eagle's tailfeathers or James B. Longacre's initials.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 26C9, PCGS# 9023)
