Description

1838 Liberty Ten, AU55
First Year of Issue

1838 $10 AU55 NGC. The ten dollar eagle denomination was resurrected in 1838, after a 24-year hiatus. The Philadelphia Mint struck a small business-strike production of 7,200 pieces that year, using the new Liberty design. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at 80 to 100 examples in all grades, with only a handful of Mint State coins extant. This impressive Choice AU specimen exhibits just a trace of wear on the design elements, with almost all interior detail still intact. Some softness is evident on some star centers, but the central devices are sharply rendered. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. The overall presentation is most attractive. NGC Census: 10 in 55, 12 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N4719)
