Description

Near-Mint 1838 Eagle
Low-Mintage, Two-Year Type Coin

1838 $10 AU58 NGC. Coinage of ten dollar gold pieces resumed in 1838, after a hiatus of 34 years. The 1838 Liberty Head eagle boasts a minuscule mintage of 7,200 pieces, making the date scarce-to-rare in all grades. Gobrecht's Liberty Head design was modified in 1839, leaving a two-year design type that is quite popular with type collectors. Coins in near-Mint condition are very rare today, and Mint State examples are virtually unobtainable.
The present coin is a pleasing AU58 specimen, with lustrous, greenish-gold surfaces and frosty devices. The central design elements are strongly impressed, with fine detail present on Liberty's hair and the eagle's neck. A few star centers are a little flat. The surfaces show few abrasions for the grade. Census: 7 in 58, 2 finer (9/10).(Registry values: N4719)
