    Description

    1838 Eagle, AU58
    Sharply Struck Example

1838 $10 AU58 NGC. The 1838 Liberty Head eagles were the first of the new Christian Gobrecht design, as the last ten dollar gold pieces previously struck for circulation (rather than for presentation purposes) had been dated 1804. The Large Letters (Head of 1838) design would be carried over into a second and final year in 1839. Most 1838 eagles average no better than Choice XF. This near-Mint example is considerably finer, both technically and aesthetically. The medium orange-gold surfaces gleam with intense luster and show scarcely a mark on either side. The strike is quite sharp overall, including the star centrils, the hair, the beads in the bun, and the eagle feathers on the reverse. An excellent coin to represent this fleeting subtype.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 262D, PCGS# 8575)
