Description

    Rare 1838 Eagle, XF45
    First Year of Liberty Type

1838 $10 XF45 PCGS. The rare 1838 was the first gold eagle struck for circulation since 1804, and represented the largest gold denomination up to that time. It introduced the Liberty motif by Christian Gobrecht that dominated the series through 1907, although the portrait was modified slightly in 1839. The eagles of 1838-1839 featured a slightly different hairstyle and a deeper arch in the neck truncation than the coins from later years. Examples of this short-lived subtype are always prized by type collectors.
The present coin is a richly detailed greenish-gold piece with problem-free surfaces and slightly subdued mint luster. Only 7,200 pieces were struck, making the 1838 a rare date in all grades. Population: 17 in 45, 23 finer (8/11).
