1838 Eagle, AU 50 Cleaned
1838 AU 50 Cleaned. First year of the popular two-year type by Christian Gobrecht, with the modified bust of Liberty. Just 7,200 pieces were struck and only a tiny percentage of those survive today. This piece is not without its problems. Numerous hairlines and an unnaturally bright appearance cause a distraction, and the surfaces are peppered with tiny abrasions that appear more serious as a result of the cleaning. An area of discoloration is noted on the obverse. Still, quite a desirable item for the gold collector.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 262D, PCGS# 8575, GSID# 9356)
