Description

1839 Large Letters AU 55. Seawater Surfaces. A very elusive two-year type coin, and one that is quite difficult to locate in AU condition. This piece appears to have seen no real circulation, but the surfaces have been dulled by the abrasive action of seawater over decades of immersion, and as a result the grade has been lowered to compensate for the diminished value of the coin. The central details, i.e., the hair strands and feathers on the eagle, are unusually distinct on this piece. The only area of softness is on the radials of the stars. There are no marks of significance on either side, and the coin overall has taken on a light reddish-gold caste. Trends $4,300 in AU 50, $15,000 in MS 60.
