Description

1839 Eagle, Type of 1838, AU 55

1839 Large Letters AU 55. This is the so-called "Type of 1838" or "Old Portrait" variety. Actually, the head is much smaller on the obverse than on the later type. A very elusive two-year type coin, and one that is quite difficult to locate in AU condition. The central details, i.e., the hair strands and feathers on the eagle, are unusually distinct on this piece. The only area of softness is on the radials of the stars. Other than normal handling marks, there are no injuries of significance on either side. The rich green-gold color of the coin shows a light overlay of reddish patina that is most appealing. One of the finer pieces known of this scarce issue.
