Impressive About Uncirculated 1839/8 Eagle, Short-Lived Type of 1838

1839/8 $10 Type of 1838 AU 53 NGC. Although the 1838 is scarcer in all grades, the 1839 Type of 1838 is always in demand as one of only two issues that displays Christian Gobrecht's original design for the eagle. This second-year issue was produced to the extent of only 25,801 pieces, and most known survivors grade either VF or XF. A conditionally rare and well detailed AU representative, the present coin is olive-gold in color with originally preserved surfaces. Both sides are somewhat scuffy in appearance, but there are no individually mentionable abrasions. The star centrils are the only inadequately struck features. A later die state, this coin still, however, displays visible remnants of the underdigit to the right of the 9 in the date.
