Description

1839 Type of '38 Eagle

1839/8 $10 Type of 1838--Cheek Tooled, Scratched--ANACS. Unc. Details, Net XF 45. A rare and all-too-often overlooked two-year type coin. The design on 1838 and 1839 tens shows distinct differences from the regular Coronet design that began in 1839. However, all too often type collectors simply lump these two years along with other With Motto tens. This design type is very elusive above XF. At the Uncirculated level, the 1839 is a major rarity. However, the cheek of Liberty has been worked on, leaving it with a slightly uneven appearance (but only apparent with magnification). Also, there are several pinscratches above the eagle's head on the reverse. The coin has excellent luster characteristics but because of the defects mentioned its value is closer to that of a problem-free XF.
