    1839 Liberty Eagle, AU55
Head of 1840, 'Small Letters' Rarity

1839 $10 Small Letters, Head of 1840, AU55 NGC. The Small Letters 1839 Liberty Head ten is known to many collectors as the Type of 1839, Head of 1840, with a remodeled Liberty portrait and smaller reverse lettering. While the new style has reverse letters that are described as Small Letters in the literature, in actuality they are only slightly smaller than the Type of 1838 with Large Letters. Measurements of several letters in the legend and denomination show a height of 1.7 mm. on the Large Letters reverse, and 1.5 mm. on the Small Letters reverse. In practice, the remodeled portrait with its date fully beneath the neck truncation are more reliable pick-up points to identify the new Christian Gobrecht design.

The Type of 1839 is significantly scarcer than the earlier Type of 1838 issue. Coinage was about half that of the Large Letters coin (12,447 vs 25,801 pieces), and the later issue's survivorship is estimated at only about 50 to 80 coins, according to Q. David Bowers in A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins (published in 2017). This Choice About Uncirculated example displays partially lustrous fields and pleasing straw-gold color. Detail is sharp for the grade, although there are moderate abrasions on each side. A small edge mark above star 8 may be a test cut. Census: 10 in 55, 6 finer (9/19).(Registry values: N4719)
