    Description

    1839 Liberty Eagle, XF40
Type of 1839, Old Green Holder

1839 $10 Small Letters, Head of 1840, XF40 PCGS. The Small Letters 1839 Liberty Head ten is known to many collectors as the Type of 1839, with the remodeled Liberty portrait and smaller reverse lettering. It is also significantly scarcer than the earlier Type of 1838 issue. Coinage was about half that of the Large Letters coin (12,447 vs 25,801 pieces), and the later issue's survivorship is estimated at only about 50 or 60 coins, according to PCGS. PCGS lists just one Mint State example. This collectible XF coin displays partially lustrous fields and pleasing straw-gold color. Detail is sharp for the grade, although there are moderate abrasions on each side. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 7 in 40, 18 finer (6/19).(Registry values: N2998)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 262F, PCGS# 8580)
