    Description

    1839 Eagle, AU58
    Popular Type of 1838

1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters AU58 NGC. The Liberty Head design used on the eagles of 1838 was modified slightly in 1839, creating a two-year subtype. This attractive near-Mint example retains the older motif, with a sharply rounded neck truncation and the hairstyle that covers most of the ear, leaving just the lobe exposed. From a mintage of just 25,801 pieces, the 1839, Head of 1838 eagle is a scarce issue and is seldom encountered in high grade.
The present coin is an attractive near-Mint example, with strongly impressed central devices. The stars are a little flat and the reverse exhibits a dark alloy splotch at the rim near 6 o'clock. The pleasing greenish-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster. Census: 27 in 58, 12 finer (9/11).
