    Description

    1839 Liberty Eagle, XF40
    Scarcer Small Letters Variant

1839 $10 Type of 1840, Small Letters XF40 PCGS. The design of the Liberty eagle was modified partway through the year in 1839, with the new portrait showing reduced curvature in the truncation and smaller letters in the reverse legend. Known as the Type of 1840, the new design was struck to the extent of only 12,447 pieces, making it considerably more elusive than its Type of 1838 counterpart. This lightly abraded orange-gold specimen shows only a touch of wear on the devices. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 6 in 40, 13 finer (2/16).
