    1841-O Eagle, AU50
Eye-Appealing Example of the First O-Mint Ten

1841-O $10 AU50 NGC. The New Orleans Mint eagles are a rewarding series to collect, particularly those that predate the Civil War, which are far more elusive than the later issues. The 1841-O issue was the first O-mint eagle coinage, a meager 2,500 pieces. Examples are rare in all grades, usually seen in no better than XF condition, and the issue is the second-rarest O-mint eagle overall, behind the ultralow-mintage 1883-O (800 pieces struck). This eye-appealing AU example boasts yellow-gold surfaces that show a fairly sharp strike and a scattering of mostly small marks on each side, although two thin, straight scrapes appear on the reverse under the eagle's left wing. Census: 8 in 50, 13 finer (1/14).
    From Christopher Bently's Nob Hill Collection.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 262J, PCGS# 8583)
