Description

Rare, Low-Mintage 1841-O Eagle, AU53
Well-Struck and Minimally Marked

1841-O $10 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. The only variety known. The 1841-O ten dollar is a highly popular issue, owing to it being the first date of the denomination to be struck at the New Orleans Mint, its extremely low mintage of 2,500 pieces, its overall rarity, and the lack of high-grade survivors. The PCGS website estimates a mere 50 to 75 coins known. NGC has certified just 47 examples, the finest an AU58, and PCGS has seen 53 specimens, the finest again an AU58.

Bright, brass-gold coloration on this AU53 offering reaches out to the observer. Well-struck design elements include the star radials and Liberty's hair curls, elements that are weak on the majority of specimens. While both sides reveal a few small circulation marks, the surfaces are not excessively abraded with the deep detracting marks ordinarily encountered on most survivors. These factors result in this coin having much better eye appeal than typically seen for the date. Census: 6 in 53,76 finer (11/13).
