1841-O Ten Dollar, XF45
Rare New Orleans Issue

1841-O $10 XF45 PCGS. According to Doug Winter's recent edition of Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, (1838-1909), the 1841-O "is the second rarest No Motto eagle from New Orleans in terms of the overall rarity and it is the single rarest in high grade, eclipsing even the 1859-O."

There are an estimated 65-75 examples known with fewer than 10 pieces in About Uncirculated. Only one survivor has a claim to Uncirculated status: the Eliasberg coin, also the plate coin in the third edition of the Winter reference and a piece that is now housed in the New England Collection.

The Jacobson coin is clearly finer than average for this issue, with only light wear on the design elements and lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces. The current PCGS population of 12 in XF45 seems severely inflated since only two examples in this grade have sold at auction since the middle of 2005.
