Description

Important 1842 Large Date No Motto Ten MS64

1842 $10 Large Date MS64 NGC. This wonderful No Motto gold coin has radiant luster and an excellent strike. Only the final star lacks complete detail. Untoned and attractive with a minimally abraded obverse and only a few unimportant reverse marks, near the beak and on the shield.
All No Motto tens, even the relatively high mintage 1847, are extremely rare in MS64 or higher. The sole exception is the 1849, which is merely very rare in MS64. The denomination was too costly to be collected by 19th century numismatists, and shipwreck hoards of Uncirculated No Motto gold coins have generally consisted of double eagles.
No Small Date examples have achieved a grade of MS64 or higher. NGC and PCGS have each certified one Large Date as MS64, and another as MS65. The pedigrees for those four coins are likely those listed below, although one of the PCGS MS64 pieces is now graded MS65 PCGS, and another is now graded MS65 by NGC:
1. NGC MS64. Franklinton Collection, Part II (Stack's, 1/2008), lot 1010. The present lot.
2. PCGS MS64. FUN Bullet (Heritage, 1/2001), lot 638.
3. PCGS MS64. Warren Miller Collection (Heritage, 10/1995), lot 6239; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 593.
4. PCGS MS64. Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2000), lot 7741.
