Description

High Grade Example of the Scarce 1842-O Eagle

1842-O AU 50 PCGS. The 1842-O is a rather common coin in VF and even XF condition. It does not become rare or expensive until the AU plateau is reached. There are very few AU pieces known, being judged as a low to mid R.7 piece at that level with fewer than a dozen pieces believed to exist. The coin has a distinctive green-gold color overall with slight remnants of mint luster seen surrounding the devices. Some weakness is noted in the centers, as is usually the case, and the coin shows minimal abrasions. The most obvious identifiers for pedigree purposes are a horizontal milling mark on the jawline of Liberty, a tiny spot by star 4, and a slightly discolored area next to the left side of the eagle's neck.
