1844-O Liberty Head Eagle, MS61
Ex:
S.S. New York, Rare in Mint State

1844-O $10 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: S.S. New York. Diagnostics for the variety include the remnants of a misplaced digit in the dentils below the 8 in the date and recutting on the inner left loop of the O mintmark. The 1844-O eagle (118,700 coins struck) claims an average certified grade that falls between XF45 and AU50. The Mint State population consists of perhaps 10 or so representatives, according to Doug Winter.

This bright, partly lustrous Uncirculated Louisiana was rescued from the wreckage of the S.S. New York, which sank in the Gulf of Mexico in 1846. It features abraded yellow-gold surfaces and impressively sharp relief elements. Census: 5 in 61, 4 finer (11/21).
