Description

1844-O Ten Dollar, MS61
A Rare and Important Offering

Fewer Than a Dozen Known in Uncirculated

1844-O $10 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Ex: Simpson-Hall. The 1844-O is one of three New Orleans eagles from the 1840s with a mintage greater than 100,000 pieces. It is common in all circulated grades but it is rare in Uncirculated with only nine to 11 examples known. This includes a unique proof graded PR66 Cameo by NGC, which is regarded as one of the most valuable of any gold coins struck at the New Orleans mint.

The Jacobson coin was last sold as lot 233 in Legend's September 2015 auction, where it realized $21,738. It was earlier in the Simpson and Hall Collections. It is one of just two Uncirculated 1844-O eagles approved by CAC with the other grading MS60.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the only PCGS-graded, non-shipwreck Uncirculated 1844-O eagle that is potentially available to collectors; all of the coins graded higher than this are off the market in tightly-held collections. Like many other 1844-O tens seen, this piece is also well-detailed. Abrasions are slight and only minimally effect the mint luster.
Ex: Simpson-Hall.
