Description

Rare Mint State 1844-O Eagle
Only One Piece Finer at PCGS

1844-O $10 MS61 PCGS. The 1844-O eagles were formerly rare in AU grade, and now they are merely scarce, thanks to the S.S. Republic shipwreck, which had a few dozen examples. The issue is also quite rare in Mint State, even though it is the third most common No Motto O-mint eagle, after the 1847-O and 1843-O. This MS61 specimen is one of two so certified at PCGS, and there is one finer (9/10). A few contact marks in the prime focal areas and elsewhere appear to preclude an even finer grade, but well-struck surfaces, attractive yellowish-orange color, and much luster emanating from both sides sum up to a coin with greater eye appeal than the numerical grade might suggest. Population: 2 in 61, 1 finer (9/10).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 262T, PCGS# 8591, Greysheet# 9432)
