Description

1846 Ten Dollar, AU55
Scarce Issue Overall, Seldom Found Finer

1846 $10 AU55 PCGS. CAC. The mintage of 20,095 pieces is a strong clue the 1846 might be a P-mint rarity, but it is much scarcer than even the mintage suggests. Apparently it was only by chance that any examples survived in mint condition. Only 125 to 175 pieces are estimated extant in circulated grades and most of those are VF-XF. AU examples, such as this one, are rare and underrated. The devices are sharply defined, except where slight friction interferes with detailing, and a number of small abrasions are scattered across each side. Much die polish remains, especially evident around the devices, but by and large it is diminished by the numerous small marks present. Population: 8 in 55, 5 finer. CAC: 3 in 55, 0 finer (1/18).
