Description

Unworn So-Called 1846/5-O Eagle

1846/5-O $10 --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. Breen-6875. The so-called 1846/5-O overdate eagle has a small circular die lump inside the loop of the 6, that Breen called the "knob of a 5." Many experts believe that it is a die defect rather than a true overdate. But it is listed in the Guide Book, assuring its popularity as an important variety.
Perhaps equally important, and seldom mentioned, is the sharply repunched mintmark, with the top of the first punch visible above the final entry. The obverse is harshly cleaned with heavy hairline, despite the retention of full yellow-gold luster. The reverse has a subdued, matte appearance with dull brownish patina.(Registry values: N4719)
