Description

Unlabeled Overdate 1846-O Ten-Dollar

1846-O AU 50 PCGS. 1846/5-O Overdate, but not labeled as such on the insert. This is the more commonly encountered overdate of the year, showing part of the knob of the 5 within the loop of the 6. Also, the mintmark is placed over the EN of TEN. While called the more "common" of the two overdate varieties, this use of the word must be taken in context. It is anything but common, and is, in fact, quite rare. It is, however, the more frequently seen of the two varieties, both of which are rare in the absolute sense. A mid-condition census coin. The surfaces on the obverse show three planchet laminations that radiate outward into the fields from the central device of Liberty. The green-gold surfaces retain much of the original prooflike finish and show numerous, small abrasions. The most obvious mark is in the upper reverse field to the left of the eagle's beak.
