Description

1848 Eagle, MS61
A Condition Rarity

1848 $10 MS61 NGC. An impressive Mint State example representing the beginning of an important historical era in American history as James Marshall discovered gold in California the same year this coin was struck. However, it is doubtful that this piece, or any 1848 eagles, were struck out of California mined gold.

Eagles were only minted in Philadelphia and New Orleans during the year, and the New Orleans pieces are elusive. This lovely Mint State piece exhibits above average design motifs with brilliant yellow surfaces and reflective fields. Highly appealing and quite rare. Census: 11 in 61, 11 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2633, PCGS# 8599, Greysheet# 9368)

Weight: 16.72 grams
