Description

    1848 Eagle, MS63, Spectacular Appeal
    One Finer at PCGS

1848 $10 MS63 PCGS. CAC. Despite a healthy mintage of 145,484 strike for circulation, the 1848 eagle is surprisingly scarce at or approaching the Mint State levels. Several dozen examples were recovered from the S.S. Republic, which sank in 1865, yet not a single Mint State example was among them. PCGS has seen precisely seven submissions in the Select grade level of the present piece, with a single MS64 finer; the NGC population data are not far different, except that they claim a single Gem (3/12). Blatant eye appeal resounds from each side of this piece, with splendid, mellow orange-red color complementing daubs of pale jade. Deep mint frost covers the devices on both sides. An unfortunate curving scrape on the lower neck is the only singular mark. Parallel die striations on the reverse appear to be from the planchet production, and the strike is remarkably sharp, close to full save for minor softness on the hair in the central obverse. A spectacular coin.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2633, PCGS# 8599)
