Description

1848-O Eagle, MS61
Challenging New Orleans Ten

1848-O $10 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1848-O is rare -- but not impossible -- to find in Mint State, as are many of the early O-Mint eagles. The mintage of 35,850 pieces ranks as moderate for the New Orleans production of ten dollar gold, although most survivors saw extensive circulation. Most higher-grade pieces show evidence of rough handling at the Mint and during transport.

This example displays mildly prooflike surfaces and a pleasing greenish-gold patina. The strike is typically soft at the stars, which are rounded at the centers, yet somewhat bolder than expected on Liberty's portrait on the eagle's head, neck, and talons. Light field abrasions and a few nicks on the rims are noted, as are some small marks around the eye and forehead. Mint luster shines across the reflective fields. Population: 2 in 61, 7 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719)
