Condition Census 1848-O MS 64 Liberty Ten Dollar

1848-O $10 MS 64 PCGS. The 1848-O eagle is an elusive issue in all grades, owing much of its scarcity to a drastically reduced mintage at the New Orleans facility of 35,850 pieces. Even an accurately graded AU can be considered extremely scarce and only a handful of Mint State pieces are known. This issue also has the reputation for being the worst struck O-mint ten from the 1840s, and the normal deficiency in highpoint detail does show up here on Liberty's curls and on the interior plumage and talons of the eagle. In addition, there is a noticeable lack of radial lines on most of the obverse stars. The shimmering surfaces on this remarkable 1848-O ten are a lovely green-gold color with the slightest interplay of reddish patina. Abrasions are of no notable concern, with only a few trivial pinscratches located on Liberty's neck under light magnification. A tiny stain between stars 1 and 2 is more of an identifier than a distraction. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (11/99).
