Description

Remarkably Well Preserved 1848-O Eagle, One of a Mere 35,850 Pieces Produced

1848-O $10 AU 58 PCGS. The 1848-O ranks eleventh out of the 20 New Orleans eagles in terms of overall rarity. In grades above XF 45, the 1848-O is tied with the 1846-O as the eighth rarest eagle from this Mint. The typical '48-O eagle is one of the most poorly produced gold coins from the 1840s. The present example, while certainly not well struck, displays acceptable definition over the central features. The obverse stars are noticeably flat. There are scattered abrasions, most of which are singularly innocuous, and the color is a pleasing green-gold hue. We last offered a PCGS certified 1848-O eagle in AU 58 as lot 8092 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Sale. That coin realized $9,750. (NGC ID# 2634, PCGS# 8600)
