Incredibly High Grade 1848-O Eagle, MS 64 PCGS
1848-O $10 MS 64 PCGS. In his 1992 book on O-mint gold coins, Winter lists two Brilliant Uncirculated and three About Uncirculated examples on the Condition Census listing for this issue, a fact that immediately catapults the present near-Gem to new heights of condition rarity. Implausibly, PCGS and NGC have certified one other MS 64 coin, as well as one MS 65 example and two (!) MS 66 pieces (10/00). Nevertheless, there is no doubt in our minds that this yellow-gold representative is one of the finest extant 1848-O eagles from a paltry original mintage of 35,850 pieces. The luster is predominantly frosty, although the texture thins somewhat in the open obverse field. Both sides are somewhat softly defined, but the relative lack of abrasions is commensurate with the MS 64 grade level. A small toning spot in the obverse field between stars 1 and 2 is noted as a pedigree marker.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2634, PCGS# 8600, GSID# 9438)
