1849 $10 MS64 NGC. CAC. The 1849 is one of the most common
No Motto eagles and can be found in circulated grades through About
Uncirculated with little much trouble. Mint State coins are scarce
and most commonly seen in MS60 to MS62. The issue is elusive at the
Select level and infrequently seen any finer. NGC and PCGS combined
have graded six near-Gems and none finer.Both sides of this MS64 example display semiprooflike orange-gold surfaces with good field-device contrast, stronger on the reverse. The obverse die was close to failure, giving a "bulging" look on the coin's left obverse and resulting in weakness on the stars. The central obverse and the reverse, on the other hand, are sharply struck. Raised die lines are visible in the arc of the eagle's neck and left (facing) wing. A few small contact marks on :Liberty's cheek and neck preclude an even finer grade. Census: 4 in 64, 0 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N7079)
