Extraordinary 1849 Ten-Dollar--Ex: Warren Miller

1849 MS 64 PCGS. While the 1849 has the reputation of being one of the more commonly encountered No Motto tens, it is actually quite elusive in mint condition. Formerly part of the Warren Miller Collection, this coin is illustrative of Warren's relentless pursuit of quality in the building of his set of tens. Miller already had an MS 62 coin, and for most collectors that would have been just fine. However, John Pasciuti (NAONE) turned up this coin at a Gold Show a few years ago. Wyn Carner knew that Miller would be interested and he bought the coin from Pasciuti, and then placed it with Miller.
The surfaces are fully lustrous throughout. There is also faint evidence of die striations in the fields, which lends a brightness to the surfaces and intensifies the mint frost. The striking details are not complete, but certainly not weak either. Star 2 is flat and the hair curls around the face of Liberty are a bit softly defined as are the eagle's feathers on the reverse. Otherwise, a well struck coin. The only marks of note are three tiny ones in the left obverse field around star 2. A backward L-shaped lint mark is noted on the lower jawline of Liberty. On the reverse a heavy die crack runs from rim to rim beginning between the T and E of TEN, traveling upward through the body of the eagle, into the field from the left corner of the shield, across the eagle's beak, and terminating at the rim beyond the A in STATES. Undoubtedly one of the finest, if not the finest example known. We suspect the other MS 64 examples that show on the Population Report and Census Report are actually resubmissions of this coin.
