Description

1850 Large Date Eagle, MS63
One Finer Example Extant
Exceptional All-Around Quality

1850 $10 Large Date MS63 PCGS. CAC. Semiprooflike fields show evidence of having been struck from polished dies, giving this beautiful survivor a striking appearance. Slight striking weakness on either side is trivial. Small obverse blemishes over the right side of the 8 in the date and in the field in front of the coronet identify this coin, as do small reverse spots below the A in STATES, in front of the eagle's beak, below the dot to the right of TEN D., and in the right field under the E in AMERICA.
The Large Date variety is the more frequently encountered of the two date sizes, but it is still a scarcer issue that is rarely found any finer than AU, let alone in Select Uncirculated condition. This example, housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder, is one of the finest examples certified by either major grading service and was at one time the sole finest graded. Today, this coin is bested by a single MS63+ PCGS and one MS64 PCGS CAC. PCGS Population: 5 in 63 (3 in 63+), 1 finer (3/26). CAC: 2 in 63, 1 finer (3/26).
