    1850 Small Date Eagle, MS63
    Single Finest Certified
    First Public Offering

1850 $10 Small Date MS63 PCGS. From 1795 to 1849, the ten dollar was the highest denomination produced by the United States Mint. That changed in 1850, when the double eagle was first produced for regular circulation. Eagle production declined that year, although a healthy total of 291,451 coins were still struck. That includes both the Large Date and Small Date varieties. These Small Date tens are much scarcer, especially in high grades. Curiously, this date punch was originally intended for large cents and half eagles. Its use here was unintentional.

This is the sole finest 1850 Small Date eagle extant and the first time it has been made available at public auction. It is actually a full two points higher than any other known representative. Both sides are brightly frosted, yellow-gold in color with lightly scattered marks. Strike detail is good in the centers and somewhat soft around the borders. A major die break travels from the rim to star 5 across the coronet to star 9. Die gouges (as made) appear below 50. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (1/18).
