    1852-O Ten Dollar, MS61
    The Top-Graded Example
    Significant Southern Gold Rarity

1852-O $10 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. With their energies directed mostly toward the production of double eagles, New Orleans Mint officials struck a paltry 18,000 ten dollar gold coins in 1852. In 2006, Doug Winter, who called this issue "one of the rarest No Motto eagles," estimated 80 to 90 coins survived in all, including two to four Uncirculated coins. Today, NGC shows two submissions in Mint State (one in MS60 and this MS61), while PCGS has seen one in MS60 (the Byron Reed coin). It is possible that the MS60 on the NGC Census was either crossed over to PCGS or upgraded to this MS61 and that only two Uncirculated 1852-O eagles are extant, with this being the sole finest.

The 1852-O is known for an above-average strike. This top-graded representative presents stars with mostly visible radial lines, crisp details on the curls and hair bun, and uniformly strong definition on the eagle. Orange-gold surfaces glisten with satin mint luster. A mark in the field left of the chin and another above the D in TEN D. were used for attribution. Census: 1 in 61, 0 finer (1/18).
