Description
Spectacular 1853 Liberty Head Eagle, MS64
Tied For Finest Certified
1853 $10 MS64 PCGS. A substantial production of 201,253
eagles was accomplished at the Philadelphia mint in 1853. The issue
is one of the more available No Motto eagles in circulated grades,
and lower Mint State examples are not too difficult to locate. The
situation changes dramatically at the Choice Uncirculated level,
where only four specimens have been certified by NGC and PCGS
combined (10/09). The present coin would certainly be a candidate
for any Condition Census compiled for the issue, as no examples are
known in higher grades. This lovely Near-Mint type coin is sharply struck, with strongly impressed devices and excellent mint luster. The surfaces are enhanced by an even reddish patina, with a subtle mixture of lilac on each side. Overall visual appeal is outstanding.(Registry values: N7079)
