Description
Rare Mint State 1853/2 Ten, Ex: S.S. Republic
1853/2 $10 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. FS-301, formerly FS-007. The S.S. Republic, a sidewheel steamer en route to New Orleans, plunged to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean off the Georgia coast in a hurricane in October 1865. Opinions among numismatic experts are divided as to whether this is a true "3/2" overdate or not, but what is not at issue is the rarity of the variety, one that in Mint State is extremely rare, even after the recovery of the S.S. Republic bounty. This is the finest-graded and only Mint State NGC-certified example with the S.S. Republic designation at that service. Even lacking the S.S. Republic designation, there are only two other MS61 examples at NGC, with one piece finer, an MS62 (3/08).This piece boasts pleasing luster over the orange-gold surfaces that show a few light obverse field abrasions accounting for the grade, although none are overly distracting.(Registry values: N7079)
