Description

1853/2 Ten-Dollar With a Strong Underdigit

1853/2 AU 50 PCGS. A very scarce issue with fewer than 40 pieces known, none of which grade mint state. This is a moderately abraded coin that shows a few marks on the cheek of Liberty and a small group in the field behind the neck. A bit softly struck, especially on the stars, the coin overall has a rich reddish-golden color that is quite attractive. The downstroke of the underdigit is faintly visible without magnification, if one knows exactly where to look. With magnification it is plentifully obvious, and there is even a small corner of the base of the 2 visible on the left side of the lower loop of the 3.
