Description

1854-O Ten Dollar, AU58
Large Date, Low Mintmark

1854-O $10 Large Date AU58 NGC. Variety 2. The base of the 1 is repunched, and the mintmark is low on this Large Date variety. Die cracks occur behind the hair bun, between ED in UNITED, and through the first A in AMERICA. Unlike its double eagle counterpart, the 1854-O survives to the collectible extent of 300+ pieces, according to Winter. Bright yellow-gold surfaces show typically soft devices, but partial luster remains around the peripheral elements and other design recesses. There are a few large abrasions on the obverse, most notably in the left field. NGC reports 11 finer submissions (11/18).
