Description

1854-O Large Date Ten, MS61
Late Die State

1854-O $10 Large Date MS61 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. A heavy die crack from the border to the bust grazes the left side of the 8 on this obverse die. The reverse die is perfect with no cracks, clash marks, or signs of die lapping. The Large Date variety is traditionally considered rarer than the Small Date, although the combined NGC and PCGS populations suggest the two varieties are nearly equal in rarity. However, with a Mint State population of 17 pieces versus two coins for the Small Date, this Large Date variety is more available in MS60 through MS63 grades. More available does not imply that it is common, as nothing could be further from the truth. The 17 certified examples include resubmissions. A lovely Mint State piece, this example has minimal marks on its satiny light yellow surfaces. A dozen years ago, Doug Winter enumerated one MS63 and 10 MS61 examples of this variety at NGC, and that total remains unchanged since 2006. Census: 10 in 61, 1 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 0 finer (2/18).
