Small Date, Few Marks
1854-O $10 Small Date AU55 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. The Guide
Book lists the 1854-O ten dollar issue as "Large or Small
Date," as if the distinction does not matter. But the Small Date is
scarcer, particular in better grades. This is confirmed by both the
NGC Census and CAC. The PCGS Population is muddled because in that
service's early years, 1854-O tens were certified without mention
of date size. Most were eventually broken out and sent in again,
but not all inserts were returned. This is an impressive briefly
circulated butter-gold Small Date example with uncommonly few
marks. The strike is sharp except on the lowest stars. NGC Census:
