Description

1854-O Small Date Eagle, MS61
None Graded Higher for This Variety

1854-O $10 Small Date MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Two major varieties are known for the 1854-O eagle, one with a Small Date and the other a Large Date. The former is slightly more available overall, but it is scarcer in high grades. Winter's Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909 (2006) suggests a total survival rate for the 1854-O Small Date of 150 to 175 coins, just two or three of which are in mint condition. NGC reports one coin in MS60 and this piece in MS61, plus another MS61 recovered from the S.S. Republic in 2003. We offered another MS61 with a reverse lamination error in a November 2003 internet auction. That coin went unsold and does not show up on the NGC Census.

The satiny luster that covers each side is far more vibrant than grainy and subdued, as typically found. Central design detail is extremely sharp for the issue, with nearly fully detail on the reverse. The upper stars boast strong radial lines. An important, lightly marked Condition Census coin from the Louisiana branch mint. Census: 1 in 61, 0 finer (1/18).
