Description

1854-S Eagle, AU58
First-Year San Francisco Issue
Rare Any Finer

1854-S $10 AU58 NGC. The newly-opened San Francisco Mint focused on three denominations in its first year of operations: gold dollars, eagles, and double eagles. Only token mintages of the quarter eagle and half eagle were struck, and today those issues are fabulous rarities.

Although more than 123,000 1854-S eagles were struck, evidently most of the survivors were plucked from circulation; as a result, certified examples average between Choice XF and AU, and Mint State pieces are quite rare. This near-Mint State NGC piece represents a true collector opportunity, showing lustrous orange-gold surfaces with much reflectivity and eye appeal. Census: 56 in 58, 5 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N1793)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263K, PCGS# 8615, Greysheet# 9447)

Weight: 16.72 grams
