First-Year 1854-S Eagle, AU58 PCGS
1854-S $10 AU58 PCGS. The United States's coinage facility in San Francisco began operations as an official branch mint in 1854. The Mint delivered 123,826 Liberty Eagles this year. Although this is a limited mintage, the 1854-S is the most common S-mint Eagle produced prior to 1879. We stress, however, that most survivors are in lower circulated grades, and PCGS has seen just seven AU58 representatives and four Mint State examples (10/01). This is a frosty textured coin with a mostly orange-gold appearance. The central features are well struck, the surfaces are typically abraded for a circulated gold coin from the early frontier era. There are a few tinges of irregular color around the reverse periphery, a scratch in the left obverse field is also noted.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263K, PCGS# 8615, GSID# 9447)
