    Description

One of the Finest Certified 1855 Half Eagles, MS 64 PCGS

1855 $10 MS 64 PCGS. Most of the Uncirculated examples of this scarcer issue that have survived fall into the MS 60-62 grade range. To date, NGC and PCGS combined have seen one MS 63 example (see above), one MS 64 (this piece), and a single MS 65 (5/00). The present near-Gem is, therefore, one of the finest 1855 eagles available to today's specialists. This is a gorgeous coin that exhibits pinpoint striking detail over the central devices. Both sides are golden-rose in color with a richly frosted texture. The nearly abrasion-free, lustrous surfaces would probably warrant a full Gem grade were it not for an isolated area of disturbance over the lower right quarter of the obverse. A beautiful and important coin, nonetheless. (NGC ID# 263L, PCGS# 8616)
