    Description

    1855-O Eagle, AU53, Slanted 5's in Date
    Attractive and Relatively Unmarked

1855-O $10 AU53 NGC. Variety 2. The Slanted 5's in the date are the first of many lures on this AU53 1855-O eagle, a numeral style that would virtually disappear after the 1850s. The New Orleans Mint would wane in importance after the 1850s as the new San Francisco facility got up to speed (beginning in 1854), as shown by the respective mintages of the 1855-O and 1855-S eagles, 18,000 and 9,000 coins, respectively. This AU53 piece is in better shape than most survivors, showing a good deal of luster remaining on medium yellow-gold surfaces that are attractive and relatively unabraded. Census: 18 in 53, 25 finer (2/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 263M, PCGS# 8617)
