Description

1855-S Eagle, Amber-Gold AU53
Low-Mintage 'Sleeper' Date

1855-S $10 AU53 NGC. In the second year of its existence (the first full year), the San Francisco Mint produced only 9,000 examples of the Liberty eagle. Silver quarters and half dollars, along with gold half eagles and double eagles, were struck in far larger quantities. The 1855-S eagle's minuscule mintage goes largely unnoticed, and the issue is a bit of a "sleeper." This example shows the slanted 5s in the date (as do all) and attractive amber-gold color. Both ticks and wear are trivial for the grade, although some cuts appear on the lower reverse rim at 6 o'clock. The large S mintmark is tilted and rather curiously positioned. Census: 11 in 53, 8 finer (12/16).(Registry values: N4719)
