    Description

    1855-S Liberty Eagle, AU53
    Unknown in Mint State

1855-S $10 AU53 NGC. The 1855-S is an important rarity from the standpoint of availability in any grade. In his important reference work on this series, Akers ranked the 1855-S in the top quarter of all tens according to frequency of appearance in major auctions. That, of course, is because of the impressively low mintage of only 9,000 pieces and the high attrition rate. However, this issue is also an important condition rarity. Apparently there are no Mint State examples known today of the 1855-S, and AU specimens are quite elusive. The surfaces of this piece are bright with golden-orange coloration and are reasonably well struck. A number of small abrasions are scattered over each side with the most obvious mark located in front of Liberty's coronet. Census: 9 in 53, 7 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 263N, PCGS# 8618)
