Description

1855-S Eagle, AU53
Low Mintage

1855-S $10 AU53 PCGS. As the San Francisco Mint embarked on its first full year of coinage production after opening for business the previous April, production of double eagles occupied much of the time and effort at that facility. Just 9,000 eagles were minted during the year, all minted during the third quarter. Housed in a green-label PCGS holder, this lovely example has considerable remaining luster with scattered, grade-consistent marks and rich honey-gold surfaces. This issue is unknown in Mint State grades. Population: 9 in 53, 2 finer (1/18).
